3-ON-3 BASKETBALL RULES

Participants: The tournament is open players entering grades 3-12; as well as adults. A designated coach is required for all youth teams. Participants can play on only one team per age bracket.

Rosters: Each team may have a maximum of 4 and a minimum of 3 players. A team can only have 3 players on the court at any time. For adult co-ed teams, a member of the opposite sex must be on the court at all times. All games MUST start with three players and can end with any number of players (1, 2 or 3).

Bracket Types: Teams will be divided into tournament brackets based on the player’s school grade in accordance with the player’s registration form. Tournament officials reserve the right to verify a player’s entry form data; and false information will be grounds for dismissal from the tournament. Tournament officials retain the right to adjust divisions to create brackets as they see fit at any time before the tournament starts.

Court Dimensions/Ball Size/Basket Height: Games will be played on a regulation (or slightly smaller) half-court. Grades 3-4 & 5-6 and all female-only divisions will use a 28.5 (women’s) ball. All other divisions will use a regulation (29.5) ball. For the 3rd/4th-grade divisions, the baskets will be 8 feet. For all other divisions, the baskets will be regulation (10 feet). For grades 3-4, free throw distance will be set at 10 feet (15 feet for all other divisions).

Jump Ball and Possession: A coin toss at the start of each game will determine which team gets first possession. All jump ball/tie-ups will use the alternate arrow (kept by scorekeeper/monitor).

Checked Ball: The ball must be “checked” by an opposing player at the designated “check” spot before each dead-ball change of possession. The ball must be passed to begin play. The on-ball defender must remain inside the two-point arc before the first pass. In grades 3-4, defenders are NOT allowed to steal the initial pass IF it is made above the free-throw line extended. If the pass is below the free-throw line extended, it may be stolen.

Change of Possession: The ball changes possession after scored baskets and attempted free throws. Only exceptions are Technical, Intentional or Flagrant fouls. There is no “make it/take it” rule. During a live-ball change of possession (i.e. defensive rebound, steal), the defending team must take the ball back behind the 2-point arc before attempting to score.

Fouls: All called shooting fouls will result in one free throw shot (or two if behind the 2-point line), except on a successful shot, in which case the basket counts and no free throws are awarded. During a free throw, no opposing players may intentionally disrupt the shooter's unhindered throw. Players will clear the lane (behind the “take back” line) during free throws; and a possession change will happen regardless of whether the free throw(s) is made or missed. After a free throw, the ball is put into play with a pass at the “check” spot. Incidental contact between opposing players will not result in foul unless the contact creates a meaningful disadvantage. Each court will have either a referee or court monitor to supervise play. Monitors/referees can call fouls or overturn fouls that are called by players. The referee/monitor can call an intentional foul; which results in a free throw and possession by the offended player/team.

Technical Fouls: a technical foul will be called for unsportsmanlike behaviors such as taunting, baiting, or trash talking. Taunting and baiting can involve derogatory remarks or gestures that incite or insult a player. Trash talking involves a deeply personal, or verbal, attack directed toward any person(s) involved in the event. In extreme cases, the player may be suspended from the court for the remainder of the game or for the rest of the tournament. The same applies for a player who aggressively comes in contact with or assaults another player, court monitor or other tournament official. The court monitor may also assess a technical foul if a team is stalling. A technical foul will result in one point and possession for the offended team.

Crowd control: The team captain or the designated parent/coach are the only people, other than players, who are allowed to address the court monitor and/or referee. Any fans and/or parents who negatively address the court monitor or any tournament official may be assessed a technical foul that will be charged to their team.

Substitutions: Substitutions may be made during a time-out or a ‘dead ball’ situation ONLY. You may only substitute players who are named on your registration form/roster or your team forfeits all future games.

Scorekeeping: All made baskets from inside the 3-point arc count for 1 point. Baskets made from beyond the 3-point arc count for two points. Made free-throws are worth 1 point.

Game Length/Overtime: The first team to score 20 points or the team leading at the end of 20 minutes wins. Each team is allowed one timeout (60 seconds) per game. Time-outs do NOT carry over into overtime. The clock is only stopped during timeouts, player injury, or extraordinary circumstances. If there is a tie score at the end of 20 minutes, then an untimed overtime period is played. Overtime will start with another coin toss to determine first possession. The first team to score two points is the winning team.
